What will be the impact of Google's personalized search on the SEO industry?

With Google taking another step forward on the path towards personalized search, the question that arises among SEO professionals is what would be the impact of personalization on SEO industry? If you are into search engine optimization, you must have been aware that Google has provided access to a new option to some of its users. The new option allows them to identify sites they'd like to see more often on their results pages.

Consider this: do you regularly search for cheap travel packages, only to come back to same 3 or 4 sites you like after visiting many travel websites? The new preferred sites feature would allow Google to know that you want the Expedia and Hotelly sites (just an example) to be given more weight. Or you could name a local travel agency site that would otherwise be out of the visibility entirely.

One of the biggest result of this new preferred search feature would be that different people would see different search results and, therefore, rankings would mean much less or entirely nothing at all. Well, this may look very attractive to a few people, but here again the question is will this feature be a win? To use this feature, one has to sign into their Google Accounts and spend a few minutes with settings, which the average user generally doesn't like to do.

The new feature would help Google decide how to pop up preferred results automatically, and this might lead to a huge change in SEO industry. Google believes its concept of preferred sites can also be applied to utility and informative content over the Internet like movie reviews, sports scores, and blogs, as well.
